Are You Prepared for a Disaster?
Watching what's going on in southeast Texas right now is heartbreaking. Are you at all prepared for a natural distaster right in your backyard?
Living in Socal I have to be aware that the long predicted "big one" could strike at any moment. The San Andreas fault has been a sleeping giant for a while now. How long will that last for me and my family? - We have enough food, water, paper products, matches, batteries, candles and LCD lanterns to last at least a month or more. (did ya know that if you fill a large container with fresh water and then add just a few drops of chlorine bleach, not only is it safe to drink, but it will last almost forever.) - I have an axe and heavy duty gloves stored in my car. All of our supplies are stored in the garage. An earthquake could easily render some doors useless so I'm prepped. - I'm operating under the assumption that most of our neighborhood is not as prepared as we are. Bad times can bring out the worst in truly desperate people. Again, I'm prepped. Might seem like a ton of overkill for some of you. But most of you are not sitting on top of, or right next to, this:

We're more likely to experience a fire, for which my evacuation plan is a less travelled back road that less people will be on as I GTFO of town.

The worst we have to worry about is heavy flooding from a bad hurricane, so no longer than a week or two of savagery. At which point I'll probably start attacking our neighbors with a flashlight just for the **** of it.

Been there. Done that. Back in 2003 we had the car packed, photos of everything we owned of value, and I spent the night on the downstairs couch watching to see just how pink/red our east facing windows were getting.

The only way to be prepared for anything is to be rich.

I'm prepared for absolutely nothing. I don't even own a basic first aid kit or any medical supplies, which is probably dumb. If the building is on fire, I've got both a front and a back stair exit and I only live on 2nd floor, so at least that's not too bad.
Like Monkey - no extreme weather here. Last time we had a storm a car on the street outside my building was completely smashed up from fallen roof tiles, but that's about as dangerous as it gets. |
