Not really no.

I sold 4 PA systems on Ebay and ended up paying over 150 in VAT.

Well VAT would be set by the government of the country you're in, wouldn't it? It doesn't vary by seller or even vendor.

No but it's mandatory for sellers (in general) due to their terms of service.

Rate of VAT may vary but it's still present.

My point exactly. So no matter who you sell through you have to pay the same amount of VAT, which means complaining about the amount of VAT you had to pay using Ebay is pointless: you would have had to pay that amount no matter what.

I wasn't complaining about it, I was just using it as an example of why people may want to consider using a different site with a lower rate of sellers VAT if they don't have to money for it.

Like Gumtree for example.

Ebay is the best personal selling site you can use but the price you pay is the higher rate of VAT on your listings.

Right, I don't understand that. The VAT rate for a country is set. How can you pay more/less if you use a different vendor? They can only charge you what the official VAT rate is, otherwise they're breaking the law, no? VAT goes to the government, and is set by them. It isn't flexible. So Ebay, Gumtree, DoneDeal, whoever, should all be charging the same rate of VAT, pursuant to the country you live in. Am I missing something here?

In my experience the rate of VAT when selling personally (including package and posting) on Ebay is set according to the value of what your selling.

For instance;

LDS PA: I paid around £45 in VAT
Peavey Dual 400watt PA: I paid just over £60 internationally in VAT

The added amount is most likely dependent on international postage, can't remember what the cost attributed to on my statement though.
