I have no idea, it's one of those things that only makes sense to the people who say them.

I don't think this "fake music lover" idea makes any sense. If a person, say, really loves the Rolling Stones, but then turns out to only know that No Satisfaction song... then that's still loving said artist. The "fake music lover" isn't lying when he/she expresses love for an artist. Why can't you just be happy that they appreciate it instead of scoffing at the fact that they don't know everything about it?

This is what elitism looks like.

You may know them as poseurs.

Oh and btw pointing out elitism is elitism in itself.

Because those people tend to try to make others look bad while they make themselves look good. **** those people.

My point is that I find it unconstructive to look down on people for not knowing enough about a thing that they say they love.
You gotta start somewhere.

And pointing out elitism isn't elitism. At worst, it's condescending moralizing.

But I haven't ever met any people like that, so that's going to be hard.
I've seen plenty of people complain about them online though, so you'd think they were a real pariah out there in the world. Those damn blondes wearing Ramones T-shirts without even knowing more than one song or whatever. Ship them off to the nearest Gulag!

The archetype has to he based on something though? Otherwise, we're just talking about unicorns.

Anyway, I better leave the thread since all I have to add to it is complaining about how dumb it is.

It's based on exactly the kind of behaviour it depicts.
