It was just too much set up. The whole point of the joke is that the set up is a whole bunch of listing Holocaust level terrible things and then super quickly pulling the rug out from under you as if your uncle is just making an off the cuff declaration.

I've literally never come across a comedian for whom explaining the joke ruins the joke like Norm MacDonald. The man's a centipede.
