I think that says more about how soulless modern, capitalist, metropolitan life actually is than the emotional value of having a job. We need to spend about half our waking life doing something that makes the majority of the population count the seconds until we can go home just to interact with other human beings and have some kind of structure that gets us out of bed.

- i typically work mon - Fri and have always gotten at least 38-40 hours since I started. I get a lot of overtime, willingly, since I love to work and stay busy.

Happy? I could continue.

I just wanted to make sure that you can say something beyond "I like my job, it's not my fault that you hate yours."

Believe me or don't, but I do love my job and what it has allowed me to do for myself. Just because you guys are miserable has no connection to my happiness.

Uh-huh. You show me one time when I've said I don't enjoy looking after my sister. Granted, it's not the job I would have chosen, but there are a lot of upsides. I'm home all the time so no commute, I have no boss looking over my shoulder, I get to watch TV, mess on the PC, write or listen to music while "at work", and finally, I'm helping my sister cope with a terribly debilitating illness. What's not to like, UPS boy?

Yep. Reminds me of the time I had to read and respond to some essay in college about how life doesn't have meaning if you don't work. My response was scathing enough that the professor told me that she took it off of the curriculum. Occupying your time is the key, not joining some knob's law firm.

Yeah, I liked my job of almost thirty years to the extent that I didn't always hate it - though there were times when I did - but I'd have ditched it in a heartbeat if I'd won the lottery, no doubt about that.
