Supposedly vinyls last longer than everything else when taken care of; CDs scratch too quickly and over time cassettes lose their electromagnetic polarization. I only buy CDs, but just as a matter of convenience.

CD's last forever if you take decent care of em. i've seen guys with cd's where the cd looked really really scratched up but it still played perfectly. but i've seen others with NO scratches and they skipped like mad. |

The "everyone you know who has vinyl" is completely full of shit. Lucifer_sam is basically correct, except one thing I'd add is that in addition to scratching CDs because of how they're made they're very fickle when it comes to longevity. You have to be pretty anal about the storage and how you handled them and hope to hell the chemical layer holds up for decades. Vinyl is, unquestionably, the best choice when it comes to longevity.

Wow.....how did this thread get so off topic.
Ok so here's how I spent my day: Huge snow storm over here so got stuck in the house. Surfed the web and stumbled upon this site. Found the forum quite interesting. Joined and started posting.

Somehow this DJ, who worked from 1980-94, found his way to a house party I was at last night. Quite a pleasant surprise - it's not often I get to talk about the Teardrop Explodes to people I meet in real life

I went to my favorite record store, and I picked up Flogging Molly's "Drunken Lullabies", and to my surprise, the album art had all the band members autographs on it.
So yeah, looks like 2009 is gonna kick ass.
