Yeah I definitely wouldn't classify NIN as nu metal. Great band though.
I think the most obvious influence on nu metal as a genre was Faith No More. The biggest thing that's kept me coming back to a band like System of a Down more frequently than bands like Korn and Linkin Park beyond just generally writing better songs is that they knew how to have fun. I think Korn had plenty of fun, not quite as irreverent as SOAD but they had the scat screaming, bagpipe parts, their cover of Ice Cube's Wicked, a lot of pretty whacked stuff especially for the mid-90s.
And yeah, Faith No More were definitely a huge catalyst for nu-metal as a whole. Helmet too. But there was a specific subsection of industrial influenced nu-metal as well, like Orgy, Dope, Static-X, etc. I guess this is the day Synthgirl outs herself as a nu-metal kid, haha. I was into that stuff in middle school over 20 years ago so there's a good deal of nostalgia there. |

Orgy were basically 90s metal Depeche Mode and were great.

The closest I get to nu metal is 90s industrial alternative rock and industrial techno. Stabbing Westward, Gravity Kills, a bit of God Lives Underwater... so many bands which were tragically tagged as "the poor-man's NIN." Also just about anything on Wax Trax! Records / TVT. That includes NIN, Aphex Twin, KMFDM, 1000 Homo DJs, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Sister Machine Gun, Ministry, Revolting C*cks, VNV Nation, Coil, Front Line Assembly, Meat Beat Manifesto, Psychic TV, The KLF, and my beloved Underworld.
Wax Trax! Records was a fundamental part of my high school experience.

Do you have some sort of app or something that tells you when a band you don't like (i.e., anything not punk) gets discussed and then you have to come in with yet another pithy, pointless post? Seriously, why can't you just let people like or hate the music they like or hate without having to always be snide, smug and superior about it? It's very annoying. As are you.
