Handles up.

Or you can be like me and hand-wash the dishes even though you have a dishwasher because (1) you're OCD and like scrubbing things and (2) you hate loading the dishwasher.

Handles up is more hygenic and safer to unload.
If you can't tell the difference between a fork and spoon on a dish rack or
if you have a problem with water puddling in the bottom of a flatware holder,
then you've got other problems. The water shouldn't be dirty at the end of the cycle.
Plus, do you wash your hands before removing items from the dishwasher?
If not regularly, then you'll be grabbing the areas that later go into someone's mouth
when you remove stuff that's "handles down."

Handle down. You drop them down by the handle without touching the dirty part and when you take them out they're clean anyway

Marie, if you drop them down by the handle without touching the dirty part, doesn't that mean they're handles-up?*

*or am I slower than usual today?

(3) you use your dishwasher as another kitchen storage area.

Why would you do this?

Ever taken a look at the bottom of those little silverware bins? Gross **** lives down there.
Bruh, clean your dishwasher.

I always scrub the dishes before putting them in too. Should be rinsing soon as we're done with them but, you know, we get lazy.

Lucem, you're right, it's silly to talk about what I would or wouldn't do IRL. Glad you brought it up. Maybe you should write an instrumental about it. I recommend a piano paired with a clarinet. With ambient sounds of you hanging from your shower curtain you ****ing failure.

1) We never ever use the thing for dishes.
2) You can fit a LOT of canned and dry goods in one.
