I joined a few years ago and originally started posting a lot about reggae and metal to share my love of those genres. However, there's little to no engagement in most users' journals, and several moderators censor and abuse their administrative capabilities to bully new users if they don't agree with them politically about an issue or have anything to say. Simply put, the website is more about reinforcing a far-left status quo echo chamber than it is about music and making people feel welcome, and they will edit and manipulate posts of people who don't have those administrative powers.

In short, this is a community that thrives on abuse, discourages actual dialogue and has very little engagement with music-based discussion. Participate at your own risk.

Keep up the good work!

I guess laughing it off is one way to react to that review, but ultimately, bad press on the internet is one more factor contributing to the decline of MB that we have been lamenting here. In fact, I was so disconcerted by the review above that I went on sitejabber and submitted an alternative view of MB. I awarded us five stars, so don't let me regret it please guys ;)

I'm just saying I think the popularity and usage of this forum is past saving in any sort of traditional sense. We're like a free floating tumbleweed drifting across the sea floor, occasionally we'll snag someone on our way through the universe, but we certainly aren't attracting anybody in any way.

Maybe that's my pessimistic outlook but that's just how I see this place. A haven for the weirdos but not something that attracts a new base.

Oh. Wow. To be honest, yes, that was how I read it, which I felt was odd as you're generally a very friendly guy. So thanks for that. But I take your point about borrowed time. I guess we're like the guy dying from cancer who just wants to have the best time he can before he checks out. Wow that's morbid. Well anyway, I have several Genoese war galleys pursuing me, so I gots to go. But thanks for the vote of confidence. People may laugh, but man that sort of thing means more to me than you could know.

Yeah, this place is on life support and its time is limited. No reason to not enjoy the ride while it lasts and continue engaging with it.

I just hope that we get a heads up before the site admins decide to close up shop. How sad would it be if went to log in one day and just find that the site is down permanently?

If we had a heads up, we'd have a chance to say goodbye, perhaps plan a migration somewhere else, and hopefully archive the entire site so that we could still browse through the posts of yore.

I think we had a thread here where people could drop in contact details in case that did happen. Until Batty started using it to prank call people and try to get their credit card numbers. Might be worth looking at again? Assuming anyone here wants to keep in contact should the hammer come down?

Free will definitely exists. Good song.

Now you're the site saviour! Must go read it. Maybe add one of my own.
Hey, idea: why don't we all put replies to that review and show them that we're not all bastards? Well, not all of us. Well, some of us. Well, maybe one or two of us...

Damn it, your review gets looked at by people before being posted. I don't think mine is getting through.

MB has always and will always be most active when there are site-adjacent gatherings ie. plug/tinychat/discord. It just seems that only a certain kind of person can really get those going and I just don’t have the time I used to.

Oh wow yeah they don't do their jobs on that site.

Review posted! Wall of text ahoy!
Man did they ask for that!
Batty, how come you didn't say I was gay? :(
Don't I rate a sexual slur from you any more? Is it over between us? Did I listen to all that extreme metal for nothing??
:shycouch:

I don't know what you're talking about. That review was posted by Dick Felcher, not me.

I don't know if you think I do, but I certainly don't see myself as the forum's saviour (bow down before me, mortals!) - I'm quite aware that 98% of members don't read or care about my journals, the other 1% is probably asleep too. But for ME, this forum is not dead because I'm actively participating in it. You may say sure, you're writing journals nobody reads, and maybe that's so. But I always invite comment and participation; not my fault if nobody wishes to engage.

The point is that when I see a slump here I do what I can to kick some interest into the forum, whether that's opening another (doomed) thread, resurrecting an old idea (like the Album Club), something Gigantic Debaser and Tristan are trying with the Rock Album Survivor thread, or do my best to get discussions going. I don't think I've ever said this place is dead, because to me it isn't; I do what I can to keep it going.

So what I'm saying is that, sure, my journals and "excessive writings" may not solve anyone's problem, and they may be destined to remain unread till the planet turns to a cold ice ball or something, but if you think the place is dead then surely it's better to TRY to do something about it rather than just bitch? It's so easy to moan, not so easy to do anything about it. I really don't care all that much whether elphenor or jwb contribute, but if they don't they really have no right to be saying the place is dead. It's dead, maybe, cos people like them aren't taking part. Is this not like someone who joins a club and never takes part in any activities going into a deserted clubhouse and saying hey this place is dead?

Anyway, I'm off to 13th century Venice. Lots to do. Carry on.

so when you notice a slump you journal more which as you noted doesn't necessarily lead to engagement

Where as when i or in this case elph say off handedly that the forum is dead it sparks at the very least several pages of heated engagement, which admittedly is thanks largely to you. So you tell me which method is more effective?
