As a childhood dinosaur nerd I still replace "therapist" with "therapod" in my head.

HNY Steph; hang in there. Let us know if you need to talk.

So it's a returntable? Sorry.
I don't know which world you live in but support and understanding isn't enough to fix depression dude. It needs expert attention and normally, medication. Random people on the internet saying "hang in there" and posting cat pictures doesn't cut it.

Yes it does.

My point, which you completely missed, was that sure, therapy and (maybe) anti-depressants can be PART of a cure for depression, but you need human contact and understanding too. Karen takes anti-depressants, but her mood is much more lightened by my making her toys dance and sing showtunes for her, or attack me. It's a process with many moving parts, and no one thing will cure it, if it can be cured.

Also, you're mischaracterising what I said. It's not a general "hang in there", which isn't a whole lot of use either. I made it clear, and have done on many occasions, that Steph, or anyone who feels the need to, can contact me by PM and talk if need be. I've suffered bad depression myself, and the doctor I went to was actually very useless, completely against anti-d's (though at the time I had not eaten for three days at all and was feeling weak as the above), saying they would take weeks, even months to kick in. There's by no means any guarantee I could help, but sometimes talking does help, sharing your problems and knowing someone is there for you.

In my estimation, Steph knows full well that she feels she needs therapy (as evidenced by her next post: she's already getting it) and anti-d's which she's on. She surely does not need or want to be told what she already knows, and which is already in hand. Whether I was wrong or not, I believe she was reaching out for some human compassion, some understanding and support. Your response sounded like a doctor who throws pills at you and shouts "next" as if that solves the problem.

And Happy New Year to you.

I think a lot of us here (and maybe on forums in general) have depression issues and each of us have to respond to it in our own ways. For some, it could be a chemical imbalance, for others, life experiences, or maybe even a combination of the two.

The point is, and I think that was what Trolls was trying to point out, is that there is no One Size fits all approach to mental illness. If Steph can cheered up by cat pictures, who are we to say that's wrong?

Hang in there, Steph.

I can talk about depression that I do not have right now which is surprising for what is happening to me...
I got really down as far as possible and I tried drugs I really tried as I wanted to be well again..I was told the pills work, it's you putting the pills down that is the problem..They made my head have and feel like running water was the weirdest feelings and that was on a half dose...I tried for a few weeks and then said stuff them.

I was told that I was not suitable for the talking therapy as that would set off my thoughts to obsessiveness behaviour..I did have constant bad thoughts but that is I believe very common when the mind is bothered..
I did end up in Hospital but that is not something I would want to talk about. It is of no help to anybody.
I ended up on a forum and met a person who I just got on with really well.

We talked, I talked a lot about my life and loads of stuff that happened to me and my Sister. How one thing led to another and then regular chats..

Over time I started to feel really good about myself so from my view the talking was the answer....I take multi vitamins and minerals and just natural substances if and when things occur that I feel maybe help..

For many years I took 5HTP at night for rest. It worked for me having been on sleeping pills to get any sleep what so ever and knowing the effectiveness was failing.

I think the mind is so so complex that you just can't say what is going to help one or another. There really is not any magic wand and people will have their own ideas what could help..
Yes for sure a professional should be able to help many, but never seemed to help me.
I was maybe lucky finding a life friend that cared enough.

Hope you find some help that changes your situation...Life is so short you just need to feel good to enjoy it...In fact this can happen to anybody and not necessary know why either.

It doesn't seem to be used enough but Lucem started a mental health thread a while back. It's a good place to throw yourself out there so to speak. Anyway, if anyone is interested...

These days that's psychiatry's loudest and most embarrassing critic, at least in the US, but it wasn't always thus...
