Well, the reality of it is that the only adjustment I'm making in the Middle east (and Malaysia) is to be "discreet" and not touch or kiss my partner in public, which we don't do in Croatia either. Maybe you'll be surprised to know but a great deal of gay people still have to be careful even in Europe. I can get my head bashed in Croatia or Spain or Ireland for holding by boyfriend's hand so it's nothing strange, unfortunately. We'd still have to behave in a similar way in Europe, only we'd be poor. :/

So yeah, it's not ideal but life's a bitch and I'm definitely not the type to starve for my principles. I'll take their homophobic money thanks.

Most of these countries have a kind of don't ask don't tell policy. There are are plenty of local gay people (Lebanon especially has a thriving gay scene, although they are probably one of the most liberal arabic countries). Same in Malaysia, there is even a kind of gay club in the middle of KL. As long as you don't participate in any rowdy orgies, you are ok. Gay people exist and meet other gay people and have sex in Iran and Saudi also. People adjust to all kinds of circumstances and not everyone can simply move to the "liberal west".

I can only speak for Ireland, but while you might (might) get attacked here (it's very doubtful and I have not heard of any incidents - doesn't mean they don't happen I know) it is illegal to attack anyone, including those of a different sexual preference than you, so even if you did get attacked you could go to the cops, whereas where you are I assume they'd just offer to finish the job, or laugh you out of the station. Remember, we were the first country in the world to ratify same-sex marriage. Come to Ireland!

On second thoughts, don't. It's a ****hole. But a gay-friendly ****hole.

Yeah i was surprised he said Ireland i thought they were fairly socially liberal.

And of course you can get gay bashed anywhere but some places it seems more likely. I'm guessing somewhere like Croatia is probably different from Western Europe but i dunno much about it.

Speaking of, I’m flying in to Wyoming Thursday to “receive” my brother’s remains. We are postponing the funeral until the end of October.

Can military folks clarify something for me? Why did they keep his body in custody for so long? What are they doing with it? Is it customary that combat/active forces deaths are closed-casket as a rule?

oh I'm glad you get to go to Wyoming. It's so weird to me that the military has any say in those funeral matters

He’s remained at Dover for all this time. They said they have their own embalmer…
