It’s an academic job in a country famous for using its one LGBT-friendly metropolis to shield itself from criticism over being a literal apartheid state.
One thing I realized during the pandemic is that in the long term I’d much rather teach high school and live in Montreal than have something resembling an “academic career” and live in a place where I feel like ****. |

In that case, you do keep some weird hours.
Anyway, if you're not happy, move dude. I'd imagine people in academia have plenty of choices. Working in oil and gas, I kinda don't. Also, I'm from Eastern Europe so my university degree is basically toilet paper. Definitely not a wide range of employment options. :/

You're just finding this out?
Anyway, now they're making a push towards clean(er) energy, not because anyone believes it's "the right thing to do" but because oil is gonna run out and you gotta keep the profit coming for the shareholders! Go green!

In the humanities the situation's not great to put it mildly. If you have a PhD from a good university you can usually find adjunct (i.e. temporary & precarious) work if you apply to a thousand different places.
I once thought this lifestyle held a certain romance but after 2 years away, 1.5 of which coincided with you know what, all I want is to get back home, whatever employment situation awaits me (or rather my partner, whose "turn" to work it would be by then). Quote:
