If I had lived in Austin at your age and I was offered a job at Waterloo,

Yeah, uhhh...let's see - do I wanna work for a Japanese conglomerate
where drunk and drugged homeless people hang out wanting to start fights -
a place where I have to fear for my life each late night I work ...

OR

... do I wanna work surrounded by music in a store that's been voted the best
music store every year in Austin since 1982 and is recognized nationally as one
of the best remaining record stores in the country (Oh, does that make it the
dreaded corporate?)

If you get in that place and you find you don't like it, you'll at least be able to
go to another one in town (possibly less able to pay you as well because of
their independence - but not always) and say, "yeah, I worked at Waterloo..."

Holy crap. It would be like a music fan in San Francisco being asked, "Hey!
Would you like a job at Amoeba?" and having to decide between that and 7 fucking 11.

Then, yeah, I'd look at the record store job as a transition job.
No idea what the employer is like at Waterloo, but if they like you enough when
you work part-time - and they know that you're working a second sucky job,
there's always the special offer that comes later - or maybe you end up
eventually at TWO record stores - one cool and the other "corporate" in order to
eat and pay the rent.

...but I'd just look at this record store thing as transitional - unless you're
gunning for a higher position as a 7-11 guy.
