Just got the call.
News ain't good.

Ciaran has more or less confirmed that the growths on Eddie's front legs - which are, he says, very large, are cancerous. He doubts it's possible for Eddie to come home now and have any sort of a life, so Karen and I have discussed it - well, come to terms with it really - and there's nothing left to be done. We can't have him living in pain just to assuage our sorrow; I always said when there was no hope, when I had advice that it was time to let go, from a trusted source, that I would.

And we will.

Gonna be pretty sad for a while, folks.

Thanks for all the support and advice, encouragement and prayers. Sadly, there's no longer anything anyone can do, and we have to face that fact.

The last cat standing has fallen.

TH, you're such a strong person but I know you must be devastated. I am so sorry about Eddie. I'm thankful that Ciaran has been there to give you sound advice and ease Eddie's pain. I'm sorry that you and Karen have to go through this nightmare - I wish it were happening to me instead of you. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Thanks everyone. I felt there was something amiss when Ciaran didn't say "Eddie's doing fine", which is what most of the other conversations started with, but it was still a shock to hear how bad he is. I talked it over with Karen but as I said to her, it wasn't really making a decision, more coming to terms with the inevitability of it. She's very upset of course (as am I, but have to show strength in front of her) but we both agree we couldn't keep him in pain and stretching out his life; it would be cruel, selfish and ultimately pointless, as we'd just be delaying the end.

I guess there'll be a party in Cat Heaven tomorrow when he's reunited with Ritchie and Millie. Viva Las Tres Amigos! Or something.

He had a good life, was loved, pampered, occasionally chased after and called a **** but always had our affection, protection and devotion. I guess in the end that's all you can hope for.

Not looking forward to the call tomorrow, nor getting rid of his things, especially the food and litter I got on Friday in the hope he'd be home.

And special note to ribbons: I don't wish it was happening to you. You've enough to deal with as it is.

Cat litter still works for human waste (helping with the water bill) and just start mixing in a bit of pureed cat food in with each of Karen's meals and she'll get some extra protein while being none the wiser.
