Yeah, we only give to make ourselves feel better, but it does, for a little while.
I remember once I dropped a fiver into a guy's collecting tub on the street. Dude had been getting coins, if at all, and eyes wide when he saw the blue. Came after me to thank me, seemed really genuine. Another one, same sort of thing, I was in a shop after I'd given him the money and he came in after me, buying some rolly tobacco. Saw me, said thanks a lot man, seemed really pleased.

They hang out at the ATMs in the city; kind of idea of looking at you with sad eyes as you take out your money (or probably if you're alone jumping you, though the one I use(d) was always busy, being in a sort of midtown location). I wouldn't give them money - kind of don't want to in front of other people in case they think I'm trying to be the big guy, look at me - but I was then in line for donuts and I bought him a bag. He was freezing and obviously hungry, and while I'm sure he would have preferred money, a hot bag of sugary donuts on a cold day would have gone down well.

I decided in the store I would hit him up with 10$. I never give to the homeless. Ever. I know what they spend it on and I'm too selfish to feed their habit. Plus there's too many of them. I always say no. But I felt generous for whatever reason.

On the way out he starts to approach me with his spiel and I cut him off before he can spit it out and just hand him the money.

I look him square in the eyes. His eyes are so cloudy I dunno how much he even sees. It looks like he already has serious cataracts. I tell him " one day that ****s gonna kill you." He gives me a bunch of BS about how he already drank a bunch of liquor and was just looking for a bite to eat. I knew he was lying cause we were blocks from the soup kitchen where he could easily catch a free meal. He was looking for the next hit. I know the feeling. I wished him good luck and walked away.

A block later another homeless dude came up to me to beg and l told him i got nothing for you. Wasn't his lucky day. Just missed me. It reminded me why I generally don't give money to beggars. It's a cold world.

Good post

One day a homeless person in the dead of winter asked me for a cigarette and I had to hand it to him cause his fingers were so numb. So I got him some Dollar Store gloves and it just seems like a good thing to have on me if I see a homeless person with no gloves.

Socks and tampons are the #1 requests here, but good call on gloves. I stock up on dollar store umbrellas too, but thanks to global warming it hardly ever rains anymore.

True. Even some of the women want them.

I didn't know that, that's useful information. There are quite a few homeless people around where I live and I've been wondering what's best; I've considered taking a bunch of apples with me to hand out but this seems more practical.

Also check you Cali privilege, global warming only brings more rain here lol

Pffft check your amsterdanish privilege! You get rain, but I get forest fires!

Lol why is MB a better method for organizing mutual aid than anything IRL?

oh damn that's true. If it's any consolation it's just a matter of time before Holland will have another great flooding (and my family home is definitely in one of the areas that's going under). Gotta love the brutality of mother nature.
