Professor of lazy thinking over here giving his thesis on monkeys.

And even though you make an important point that changing how a person thinks obviously does not require an evolutionary adaptation it’s my theory, just my theory, that it will take an evolutionary adaptation to survive as a species and it will have to involve the elimination of hierarchical social structuring and honestly I don’t think we’re going to get there. But if we do, I believe that technology will be deeply involved in that evolutionary shift.

I realise that technology influences evolution. Maybe it will be as important as you think.
When someone mentions things like that I just immediately associate it with those tedious tech enthusiast guys who make it into some kind of religion. Urgh.

There's not much doubt about it imo. Technology outpaces evolution by leaps and bounds. It will almost certainly either destroy us or transform us. I'm betting on the former.

What is this Cartesian horse ****?

Well maybe you’ll respect that I argue strongly against the assumption that technology is going to solve our environmental concerns. I’m talking about if we survive which in reality I consider it a foregone conclusion that we won’t. I’m just speculating on what it would take.

Nah, technology drives evolution. Fire is technology. Agriculture is technology. Time keeping is technology. All of these things changed the course of our evolution.

It’s not Descartes. It’s the simple fact that you can’t think something without thinking it. You have to experience something to have experienced it.

Cool

As long as you understand consciousness is purely material and not some kind ethereal emergent property of the mind or whatever they’re teaching in ghost classes these days.

When I say evolution I'm referring to biology. Technology hasn't existed long enough to drive biological evolution to any significant extent and it advances so much more rapidly than natural selection that it will change us through other means far before it exerts enough evolutionary pressure to alter us genetically to the same extent. For example, we will be genetically engineering babies long before natural selection catches up to the impact technology has had on us through the process of random mutations and selective pressures.
