^ Did no one notice "defence" or were you just too embarrassed for me to say?

I found a rat in one my traps in the garage, but it had only gotten one of it's front arms stuck, like up to its rat armpit, so still was fully alive. I didn't want to release it but I also didn't know what to do. Rather, I knew I needed to kill it but I didn't know how to. The actual thoughts that went through my head were "I could get a knife.... and stab it..." and "I guess I could smash it with a shovel?" I couldn't. Some wannabe farm girl I am.

Anyway so now I'm shopping for pellet guns, but I wanted to see if anyone else has good rat remedies. And also, if I were to get a cat, how do you pick a good cat? How can you tell if it will be a good worker? I want one that can live outside and chase the rats away.

You could buy a captive bolt pistol, but those things are pretty pricey. I'm not big on killing animals either, but if it's in a cage, you have a garbage bag, and duck tape, you can put the cage in a bag and tape it to your car's tailpipe. It'll die within a couple of minutes. You could also buy dry ice and do it that way too, which ever is less gruesome.

I don't know, the more thought I put into killing an animal, the more I feel like a psycho. Just get a bb gun I guess.

I remember my first job working at my friend's dad's warehouse and they had those toxic glue mouse traps and while sweeping one day I found a trap with a mouse fully trapped and wiggling and I had no idea what to do and I was like 18 and every inch a child so I ran to get the manager thinking he'd know what to do but he just crushed it with a shovel. I felt betrayed but realized I wasn't surprised because of course that's what would happen. I'm sure he probably was rolling his eyes at me but was a nice enough guy that he was trying to be a redneck dad about it and using it as a "man up" teaching moment.

I still feel bad about that mouse.

I had this Liberian manager that ninja'd a mouse with a shovel. It was just "MOUSE!" then BAM, it was over in like 3 seconds.

Yeah. Just kill it quickly if it's a poison trap that'll kill the rat no matter what you do. Gore is part of nature too and the rat won't thank you for drawing out its suffering just cause you're too scared to put it out of its misery quickly. A shovel will do the job just fine. I'm just glad it's you and not me cause I'd still feel like Hitler with that shovel.

I don't use poison because it is unreliable, and I don't want half dead toxic rats running around where my dog plays. I feel like with a shovel I would **** it up more and still not kill it and then just puke and cry. And then what, I have to clean the shovel? In this economy? I hate it all.

Put the shovel over it and then step on the shovel with your full weight. It should be more than enough to kill anything.
