I've seen my city government pushing hard to expand the food banks and local support for people who are unemployed, disabled, old, etc. They don't make a dime from that kind of thing as far as I can tell.

Yep. They're intertwined at least here at the local level. The government pushes to help local businesses, and those businesses push to make people aware of stuff going on with the city.

Exactly how much of that local government action supports chain businesses?

No idea: I just don't see them trying to raise money for a Chile's or anything. Whenever there's fundraising or a food drive, it's always for the benefit of a nonprofit, some kind of cause or to support some mom & pop.

Walmart gives more to our local school district than every other resource combined (besides the government)

If I actually intend to support businesses I buy gift cards or just donate. Record store, music venues, artists and art spaces, theater companies etc.

The only reason I ever find myself ordering takeout is just that I got too drunk before dinner time to trust myself around knives and fire to cook myself lol
