I was super depressed this morning and felt really depersonalized and just angry for no reason at work but one of my coworkers is a really intensely anti-capitalism and there was a thunder storm today so we waterproofed our phones with plastic wrap and went for a walk on the beach and it was so ****ing beautiful. We made our way to an oyster bar and ate a bunch of raw oysters and I also had a bowl of gumbo. We didn’t talk about politics though. We were talking mostly about the nature of consciousness and he’s read everything from Plato to Foucault and hasn’t ever been to college. He hasn’t travelled internationally but he’s from up north and has lived all over the states including out west. He’s a good cook and there are restaurants in several states that will put him to work right away if he shows up. He’s like a character from a Steinbeck novel.

Yesterday, I visited an old friend who just got out of the hospital for what was his second bypass surgery in a few years. We played in a few bands together many years ago, and he's one of my dearest friends. Always has a smile and an ear to talk to no matter what. He's also got some of the most incredible stories. Chased by Rastafarians, shot at and barely escaping with his life, run out of town by his Mayor uncle, and all the bar fights and band/show stories. We once set up our 2 man show at a dive bar one day back in the 90's, and what started out as 3-4 drunks slowly killing themselves in a smoky stale beer smelling back alley house of ill repute became a packed house of about 300 bikers, and all because they knew him. For some reason his biker buddies got word of our show and they all decided to party with us. Memories like that are priceless. I'll be going over to his place every chance I get from here on out to help out where I can. He's in great spirits, but he's also alone in his home with his kids dropping in every once in a while to bring food and medical supplies. He does get out to dialysis 3 times a week, but it isn't really something to look forward to. I hope he stays around for a long while.
