You just have to familiarize yourself with the musical language so that you can get a better feel for what the genre is trying to accomplish. Then the randomness becomes more coherent, fun, and surprising.

Coltrane never recorded a single random measure of music. Not being defensive just FYI to anyone interested in understanding his music.

Jazz is fun partly because it has infiltrated and crossed over with every other genre at some point or another. There's a melodic freedom to the "core" ideas that started to crystallize in the early 50's and then mutate. It's never really stopped.

That's because you're expecting it to make your balls tingle with the same feather that post-punk uses.

I know it’s not as well established as church and unassailable but balls tingle is also one of my trademark expressions

I actually went and tried to find examples of what I meant but I didn't find it.

I love this song, this is about as close to free jazz as i can go

But I remember hearing free jazz that sounded so random and disjointed that I found it boring and/or unpleasant
