Have you actually had success from it though?
The spam is still present in closed groups especially since FB stopped providing support to groups last year. Maybe this was valuable advice 5 years ago, but it doesn't appear to be very relevant now.

On average I'm doing 30K in new website business every month like clockwork through FB entirely through closed group prospecting, so I spend a lot of time in them. And the small guys have a budget somewhere in the $599 to $1k range for a site experience, so trust is earned with them and their needs aren't that complex. LinkedIn has proven better for connecting with decision makers at the bigger companies (and they take longer to make decisions), but I connect with business owners constantly on FB.
I don't know what you mean by "spam" in regards to Closed groups though. You can find spam in any kind of group, especially Public ones. The groups I spend my time in don't have those kinds of issues. If your in some Public group that anyone can just post whatever they want, then yeah. That's why you join Groups where the rules are clear and the purpose is aligned in some way with the industry your looking to get into.
