Relevant to yesterday's Spotify discussion, DJ Food just shared a cautionary article from Medium about the true cost of Spotify.

He starts off saying what if you went into a record store and they just gave you the whole store. Here’s what mother****er that would be fan-****ing-tastic. He found himself going through piles of **** to find the gems. That’s a luxury not a burden. He says songs are even getting shorter to address the shortened attention span of listeners. He needs to go through my free jazz and ambient drone threads then. Then there’s the old boohoo artists aren’t making money bs. Artists have always been starving. That’s not because of the medium. It’s the nature of the beast.

Everything he says is self serving bull****. I’m not going to romanticize the days of handing over my paychecks to record stores. I’m not going to pretend that having 50 Miles Davis records at my fingertips at all times isn’t awesome.

Seriously, he’s trying to sell on me the idea that having cheap access to lots of great music is bad and he accuses SPOTIFY of gaslighting. Lol. That’s ****ing rich. You want to make sure you’re getting paid, DJ Food? I’ll pay you to come suck my dick.

Just take a coat hanger, yank it out, and chuck it in the dumpster.

Ja it's a dumb, entitled article. If you really break it down, what the author wants is for Spotify to be his one stop musical gatekeeper and for them to expand their artist profiles to include the cUlTuRe. What's funny is that it was finding artists on bandcamp that brought him to his dislike of Spotify, as if bandcamp doesn't have the exact same oversaturation issue. Spotify's largest issue is inadequate compensation for artists and he barely touches on that.

I never had the luxury of a record store curator either. At the shop I frequent, unless we're talking crust punk, I'm usually the one recommending stuff to the owner. Maybe DJ Food should join MB or send me an email.

I’ve grown to hate the ever-present argument that the more choices you have, the worse off you are.
You see this stupid canard not just with music, but with just talking about web info in general.
I want to ask this guy if, when walking into a library, he’d curse the fact that there are all of those
books in there - that maybe there should only be a select number of certain kinds of books?
Only an idiot would be put off by the British Library or the Library of Congress because
they couldn’t possibly be able to read everything there. This guy even puts the cart before the horse and
says that it creates mental health issues(!). The “paradox of choice” is not that we should have less choice,
but, rather, that we should be able to mentally deal with an evolving, complex society in both a
rational and analytical way, but instead it’s easier for too many people to take the lazy way
to pseudo-enlightenment, throw up their hands and put the blame on “the system.”
That’s a mental health issue.

I play a Kemper digital amp. It allows you to 'profile' real amps and then store them as digital rigs. They have an online exchange where ANYONE can upload rigs they've made. Screenshot:

There's currently over 13,770 files uploaded. Vast majority of them suck ass simply because the person didn't have the right tools and/or didn't do the profile correctly.

I go fishing in there now and then for diamonds in the rough. Once found I upload it into my unit. For free.

This is how it should be. Pay the $$$ for the hardware/software system you have at home but let the electronic user files be free and shareable.

I don't think my anxiety and the anxiety of making the wrong choice or the anxiety of not having enough time to experience everything that's awesome should limit my choices nor dictate a limit on choices on other people who don't deal with anxiety. Nor do I think the prevalence of options has caused my anxiety.

Babying mental illness like that doesn't help, it essentially tries to dance around it rather than teach people how to deal with it.

I pulled out after ejaculating to the horrifying sight of a broken condom once. Some time later the woman came over and took a pregnancy test at my place.
