Honestly I never really bother to worry about that ****. I show up, do my ****, tell them that I have no interest in moving up on the very odd occasion that somebody mentions it, and just have whatever fun I can talking **** to whoever I can have fun talking **** with. I don't think most people there get what I'm about except for the people who actually get a kick out of my nonsense. The ladder is irrelevant to me and I ignore it.

I told them this, they didn't listen, so I proved it by going over the lazy supervisor's head and asking what the issues there were that prevented the day shift from keeping up and solving them, basically just communicating. Night shift went from being the hands down hardest job in that field to the easiest because of me.

Oh, it also didn't help that the night chef was having me do clean up for him, that I didn't know wasn't my responsibility, while he locked him self in the head chef's office to watch porn. And I'm not lying, they found out he was watching tons of porn cause the idiot didn't clear the history. That guy was disgusting too.

No matter how you dress up being a manager that's ultimately what it amounts to and at some point I'd have to make that call and I'd have to justify why my money was more important than their money.

If you do it right, you don't really have to tell people what to do that often. Just lay out what needs to be done and let them decide how or who does it. Actually, in most cases, having a supervisor or a crew leader is almost unneeded if the the whole crew communicates properly. Their basic roll is just delivering information on what needs to be done and what got done between two different factions. Just so happens that most people treat it like an authoritarian roll because they need the power trip or some stupid ego bull****.
Edit: I have no remorse in firing somebody for being a lazy prick. You can tell who's the lazy prick in most cases. But often times they shove under-trained people into overwhelming situations and they under-perform because nobody communicated that they are doing this, that, or the other wrong and they end up getting an unfair reputation.

I agree that crews often don't really need a leader. We're conditioned to work under a leader so we do what we're told to do as well as we can do it and let the manager piece it together. If you gave the crew a reason to care about doing the job (i.e. a financial stake) we'd bang out the job like mother****ers without any need for a person to take charge, and the lack of one would actually encourage individual positions to communicate more rather than just sit in their positions and wait for some ******* to tell us what to do, which encourages a lack of communication.
