For those opposed to standardized testing: How else can student performance be objectively measured from year to year?

Non-standardized testing

Well the current system clearly isn't working and needs to be shot in the head. If you're smart enough that it isn't hurting you then great, but that just means you're above the problem and don't have to worry about the consequences. Might as well say that because you're white and don't have to worry about racist 50's housing policies that there's nothing to worry about.

I completely agree that the system is broken. However, I'm hesitant to get rid of something that allows you to measure how badly broken it is. See the article below, for instance.

Bottom line, in my opinion: Some objective criteria is necessary in order to evaluate student (and teacher) performance from year to year. Standardized testing currently measures that. If getting rid of it would improve the system, go for it---but you'll still need some sort of heart rate monitor.

Contextually appropriate testing instead of a one-size-fits-all model.

Treating schooling like a corporation is what got us into this mess. I think a census-type review would be much more effective.

Which somehow provides reliable data across a period of several years?

EDIT: Didn't see your edit above. Give me a second.

It would be a lot more effective than a model that doesn't account for context. To what end are we using this data?
