Golf is so awesome on many levels. (Caddyshack is NOT a point of reference BTW)

1. As Exo said, fresh air and exercise. And if you think golf isn't strenuous you've never played a full round. I've suffered a number of injuries from golf. Ever torn an intercostal muscle? Painful as all ****.

2. Golf is a party if you play with friends. Lots of drinking, sometimes some bud, and lots of hilarity. The 19th hole is like a keg party. Everyone is exhausted but nicely buzzed. Stories start getting swapped about the day on the course.

3. Golf is universal. Linda and I use to hook up with an Asian couple to play a round. We could maybe understand a dozen words between us, but we always had a blast playing together. "NICE SHOT" translates across all languages.

4. Golf is all about camaraderie. You hook up with a complete stranger(s) on the first tee, and 4.5 hours later after 300+ combined shots you are laughing and having fun like the best of buds (99% of the time). Everyone appreciates a good shot. Everyone has had a blow up hole and knows when to look away from a meltdown.
Do you really think I could bond with someone on a golf course? We hate each other instinctively, golfers and I.

I don't see why you need to, I'm not the one playing golf.

Minor league backyard MMA is junkt. Pro level MMA is the polar opposite. I've been watching the sport since UFC I back in 1993.

These guys and gals train and study like crazy. You need to be at the top of the game both on offense and defense in so many disciplines it's ridiculous. Boxing, greco Roman, Mui Tai, BJJ, grappling, dirty boxing, ground and pound, etc.

These folks go out and try to win at all costs but have incredible mutual respect for each other. One of the craziest fights I've ever seen was the Korean Zombie vs. Leonard Garcia. They beat the **** out of each other the entire fight.

This is them afterwards.

OK hmm I might still consider MMA then

I get irrationally angry at times just thinking about how alllll of that landed is hoarded for golfing only. If one were allowed to wander around the courses I might not care as much but the last time I did that, I was asked to leave and simply had no choice but to just cut a hole in the fence and crawl through it that night instead. (Or maybe I'm wrong and they just don't allow Chiomaras?)

Aren't you genetically programmed to kill any golfer you come within a hundred yards of?

Agreed. It's generally a way to lionize troops, and by extension the military, but on a deeper level it's a way to indulge in our instincts to be Grecian heroes who gain glory by combat. Which is kind of interesting to take in if you make a point of not buying into the jingoism. It's just a basic part of human nature that's intriguing to imbibe.

Oh, I guess you don't know how I am about propaganda. I care. Also that movie just draaaaaaags on for way too long.
Who cares if it's propaganda so long as it's entertaining cinema? Being opposed to the reason the movie exists is all well and good, but that **** stills hits a spot that, like I've already said, taps into a part of our human nature that is satisfying.

Saving Private Ryan is most definitely overly long and filled with cheese, but can you not derive entertainment from the D-Day scene or the last battle? I mean that part when they get past the machine guns on D-Day and up to the first bunker, send some dudes up to get past and lay down covering fire is just a beast with the sound engineering. So ****ing loud and awesome.
