Made the mussels. Observations:
1. Don't buy "fresh" seafood at Vons, or any other supermarket chain. I ended up having to toss about a third of them because they didn't open, which means the ones that opened were on their deathbed. 2. Jebus the house stunk for the rest of the night and even a bit the next morning. 3. Stuff like mussels, fried calamari, and oysters, etc., really need to be eaten in a restaurant with friends, and after a couple of drinks. Really not a make at home and eat by yourself kinda thing. 4. I'm going to make the garlic, shallots, butter, wine, parsley, and cream sauce again and serve it over linguini with some grated cheese. The broth was 10/10. The mussels were 5/10. 5. Been bad today. Milking drinks since 10:00 AM. Not drunk but very nicely buzzed. My enlarged liver isn't happy. |
Based on my own experience of buying at Vons, chains can be good, you just have to go to the counter and know what you're looking for (I wouldn't know when it comes to mussels even though I love them). If you've had problems with that particular location's cleanliness or freshness in the past just outright avoid it though.
Better luck next time. |

Who knows how often a chain gets fresh out of the water mussels. Disclaimer: Their fish is always great. I'm just going to stay away from stuff like shellfish, lobster, oysters, etc. |
You're close enough to the shore that that shouldn't be an issue. If they know you you should let them know about it, you might get some free **** out of it.
