So the ride home was interesting today. I'm riding my bike out of the Burger King parking lot and I see this homeless dude with a cardboard sign. I didn't know you also lived in the south; my condolences. What you describe is not terribly uncommon, even here in north Texas-- those sewer-goblins are everywhere--and then afterward of course they look at you expectantly as if it's your turn to say something equally racist and idiotic. (I find that most of them just save their comments for private family dinners/situations where they're already amidst all of the racist drunk aunts and uncles of the land.)
