Is he diagnosed schizophrenic?

This is the cruelest condition ever. I got him to see my doctor who spent about 20 minutes talking with him and afterwards made him promise to seek psychiatric help. He never did. He and I have had many conversations where he's lucid, and he'll admit he's messed up, only to wake up the next day in complete denial. I've read a ton of books and consulted with a bunch of docs and even attended a few NAMI meetings. He's 100% schizo. The only thing that keeps him grounded is living at home with me and Lin (no pressure, no stress). He's tried moving out at least a half dozen times only to crash and burn badly. The worst being when he took a job up in LA. Within a few months he'd lost the job, got thrown out of his apartment, and totalled his car. He spent 3 months homeless and when I finally tracked him down and got him home it took a few weeks to get him back to semi-normal. Those were some scary times.

This sounds a lot like my brother and he's been diagnosed manic bi-polar and is taking lithium. It's like a black and white change. Not saying your view on it is wrong but just another perspective I guess. Your right though. It sucks and can be brutal on the family. I hope you guys are managing.

Exo, I don't have a "view" on it. I've been doing everything in my power to try and get the guy help (meds). But he's 100% against them. Thing is, he's a brilliant DJ, artist, musician, and all around life thinker. He's terrified that any pill is going to dull his creativity. And he has the denial (anosognosia) to help him back up that premise.

I can't say I blame him. The meds definitely take a toll on the rest of the body. You might be managing it the right way already if he hasn't had an episode in two years besides the one that just occurred. Psychology is hard.

He's very lucky to have you. Manic states are definitely frightening, though.
(I've met so many brilliant mentally ill people who were perpetually caught in the ever-revolving door of poor state hospitals, the streets and jail. And we all know that police don't provide any safety or help whatsoever for anyone in a confused state..)

This is exactly why I stopped taking mines as well. I was also completely convinced that my psych was testing on me and making me take placebos so I just ended up flushing them. I got to the point where I told her not to give them to me anymore because it was just a waste of money. I would just come home and flush the entire bottle once I got it.

Rest assured, there's a ton more good times than bad.
