After having a blast making a series of metal mix CDs for a guy at work for a Christmas present (who was far more thrilled than I expected) I've decided to do it again for my best friend. He's expressed interest in the concept of prog, loves Tool, and claims to like changes in songs, so I'm making him a prog rock mix. I was originally gonna do one or two CDs, but after 30 seconds of consideration I realized that in a genre made up of 15-30 minute songs this would be entirely insufficient. So I'm going to fill all five of the burnable CDs that came in the pack.

Already I have listened to far more prog than I had any desire to. Discovering The Mars Volta was cool, as was realizing that I don't hate Yes or Genesis as much as I'd previously thought, but my contempt for Pink Floyd only grows. What the **** is wrong with people who like "Shine on You Crazy Diamond"? That's pretty much the most boring song ever recorded. Rush kind of rules, though, and my buddy is gonna get plenty of Hawkwind.

My friend better at least pretend to be god damned grateful or I'm going to beat him to death.

I love Pink Floyd and cannot stand that ****ing song. Wish You Were Here on the whole is dull and phoned in save for the keyboard solo on Welcome to the Machine.

Here's on of Yes's best tracks

I can kind of understand why some people might like this or that Floyd song, but nothing ****ing happens for like the first 15 minutes of "Shine On" (never made it to the second part). It's like a short, melodic intro to a real song stretched out beyond all reason.

Only Pink Floyd songs on here are "Astronomy Domine", "Comfortably Numb", and "Echoes" -- which is the only long song I've been able to tolerate so far, and I'm trying to put some kind of emphasis on prog epics, and I figure you can't introduce someone to prog with only two, short Floyd songs.. so, on I suffer.

I'll give it a shot, but I'm really not trying to bang my head against a wall listening to five million tracks by bands I don't particularly like and know nothing about. I'm not just gonna take internet recs sight unseen since I know my friend well enough to figure what he may or may not like, and I only have so much patience.

Part Two is basically the same thing.

Roger Waters: "at times the group was there only physically. Our bodies were there, but our minds and feelings somewhere else."

So basically they got so bored with it they didn't even realize that they played the same bull**** for a half hour. They split it up because only the greatest of Pink Floyd nerds could listen to it all in one sitting.

I'm curious what Chula's rebuttal will be. Something about how nobody had ever done that before.

I've brought it up a few times, I think Trollheart was the most outraged about it.

Trollheart defended it? If so I'm going to derail the Love/Hate thread.
