It's a good point. We had someone here before called Jenny something, and I naturally assumed I was talking to a girl. How embarrassing to find it was a guy... Avatars can't really be relied upon to confirm whether the member is male or female either, as we guys often use female avvys and I know that at least Vanilla, who is very female, used one of David Duchovny I think? So avoid that minefield, and until you know who's who use a neutral address just in case, unless it's obvious what gender the person is.
