Yet I have a right to be a dick. If it's not on the books then there shouldn't be any (legally enforced) consequences. Your day will come, Chula. I'm sure that there are police officers willing to put down Led Zeppelin, you should be ready for that moment.

I think it's just basic common sense. Anyone who is stopped by a cop --- for anything --- and says something like "Why aren't you out arresting real criminals?" or "I pay your salary you know", risks getting the full treatment whereas otherwise they may have got off with a warning. Cops are after all just people too, and you piss someone off, in any trade, they're gonna do what they can to get back at you. Same thing as the guy flipping burgers who gets his revenge on the guy who laughs at his pathetic job by spitting in the burger. Just human nature.

Human nature is also the reason that law exists in the first place. It may explain an officer's actions in that type of situation but it hardly excuses it.

Also look at it like this. There is no legal requirement for a warning to be given. There's also no legal requirement for the five over rule over or whatever either. So by giving you s warning instead of a ticket, the cop is actually not doing his job, and if his boss wanted to, he could take disciplinary action against the officer.

Lazy day today. Woke up late. Beautiful weather. Walked up into the hills to see if the blackberries are ripe. Found a beautiful spot to have a lie down in the sun. Woke up two hours later. Love napping outside. All that clean air.

Why would anyone, besides teenagers, act snarky towards a cop?
Just seems unnecessary.

Interesting point, but overall I disagree with unofficial standards in fields as touchy as the law.

He was a teenager at the time. I'm not really advocating for being a dick towards cops, I'm just saying that it shouldn't play into whatever law is being enforced.
