The main one is that if you're a Canadian who wants to marry a non Canadian and sponsor them for citizenship, you have to have lived together for two consecutive years after that person has obtained their permanent resident card. That's so they can verify the legitimacy of the relationship through lease or mortgage agreements or bank account statements, things like that. My boyfriend and I have been living together for three years, but he's only had his card for a year. Before that, he was just here on a student visa. So even if he proposed now, we'd have to wait at least another year or so before applying for a license to get married. We're considered to be in a common law domestic partnership right now, so I can sponsor him for citizenship right now but these are the stipulations. It's easier to just wait a few more months before moving forward to engagement.
They have those regulations in place to stop the mail order bride crap and to prevent people from staging fake marriages just to become citizens. You can actually go to prison over this if you don't follow the rules. :nono:
