You missed the point. The band released the album and lots of people dug it so it was successful in that regard.
Doesn't matter whether you think it worked or not. I could see it working really well with a few songs off of LZ1 for sure.

I think it's just a way for over-the-hill rockers trying to look like they're experimental and relevant to stroke their egos. S&M is alright, but ultimately nothing but a pointless novelty record.

Here's a great example of it working IMO. Page and Plant with two different orchestral backings.
