I gutted my GF's brothers burnt out house on Saturday. No structural damage, and no one was hurt in the fire, but man, smoke-soot everywhere. He had been letting his daughter, son-in-law, and three kids live there (he has 2 homes). The fire started because of a faulty E-Cig charger, and had pretty much engulfed the entire basement. Since they live right next door to the village Fire Dept. the flames were extinguished fairly quickly, and like I said, no one was injured.
So, as we're cleaning up I'm coming across all kinds of expensive items, Stereo's, Gaming Systems, a $1200 sewing machine, etc. but then I find a Ukulele. All the items I mentioned were slated for the dumpster (and believe me it was a pickers paradise), so I asked her (the GF's brothers daughter who was living there) about the Uke. She says, no throw it away. I asked if "I" could have it, and she said "Of course, go ahead". I didn't want to start packing my car with all of her belongings, but I made the exception for this item. So we filled the dumpster up, did the ceiling tear-out, and got everything pretty much ready for the inspectors to come out. Anyway, as we're taking a break (waiting for the beer to arrive) I decided to clean up the new Ukulele, and see what she looks like under all that soot. I cleaned it up, tuned it the best I could, and started playing some Fleetwood (Never Going Back Again), much to the delight of the pickers near the dumpster. I got a "Play that thang! Man!" from one of the smiling faces peering over the rubble. The (now previous) owner caught a bit of this, and came over and said "You saved it! I'm glad I gave it to you!". It all had me smiling for the rest of the day.
It's a cheap Rogue, but still... nice little guitar.
