Okay, so today I found out something really interesting to do with family history.

I knew my great-grandfather was Welsh, and my grandmother had mentioned that he was a boxer on several occasions, but never really made much of it. I just assumed she meant like, a brawler. Not a, you know, big-time boxer.

My mother has a resident at her nursing home who's a huge boxing fan. He also knew my grandfather. He was talking with her, and said something about my great-grandfather, Tommy Farr, being a great boxer.

My mom, again, mentioned it to me, and I was like, "Eh, let's google it and see if he has like, a little blip on a boxing website or something."

I was to be absolutely gobsmacked to find out how VERY legitimate he was. I watched his title bout (15 rounds to close points decision!) with Joe Louis, listened to one of his recordings (he apparently had a fairly successful music career in England or something) and was completely awed.

Not only was he a well-known boxer in his day, but he faced numerous other greats, and is something of a legend in Wales from what I've read.

They even made a musical about him!

what kind of recordings did he do? this guy sounds like a champ.

Hungover, fell asleep and missed my steak pie. Typical.

Sat down to watch TV and the bloody thing wouldn't come on. Well it would: I could hear the sound but no picture. Tried everything obvious (tightening then changing SCARTs, changing batteries in remote, checking all cables, confirming I wasn't suddenly in an alternate universe) then decided the damn thing had somehow died but retained the ability to produce sound. I don't know: it's an old (maybe 15/20 years old) machine, one of those bulky CRTs with a widescreen that, when I got it, was the biz, but now is close to a museum-piece, but I thought once they died it was the tube blowing and therefore nothing would happen, at all? But I still got sound.

Anyway, after agonising over it for some time I decided I had to replace it. Can't quite afford a new one, so hauled out the old set that used to be downstairs, another CRT, and then had a hell of a time lifting the original from my bedroom --- I swear it must weight forty kilos! --- then get the other one in and set it up. It's working now, but whereas before I had a 32 inch screen I now have only a 20 inch one. Takes some getting used to, I can tell you! Still, at least I HAVE a telly!

Might look round for one of those new-fangled flatscreens in the sales...

I know right? You may find it disturbing, but what I'm about to tell you will increase your horror exponentially.

In Turkey, Christmas has become New Year's. That is to say, New Year's has become Christmas..or...er...the two holidays are merged.

Exhibit A:

This is a link to a popular Wal-Mart-like chain. You will see a Christmas tree on the first thumbnail. The writing, translated, says "Happy New Year."

WHAT, you may ask, is a Chirstmas tree doing celebrating the new year?

Ok, perhaps this example was not so terrifying. This one surely is: Happy New Year!

It is a google image search of the words "Happy New Year" in Turkish. SNOWMEN...ok....balloons....ok....SANTA? NO. ANGELS? NO. WTF??

It's possible that I'm overly concerned about this issue, but it seriously makes me angry. Muslim country does not want to celebrate Christmas, YET, they want its symbolisms, colors, and traditions to be commericalized?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

So back to the pumpkin pie: I couldn't find pumpkin at Thanksgiving or Christmas. As it turns out, just this week its in season in Turkey! Come and get it!!

I am more disturbed by the fact you think I'd be do bothered by pumpkin pie on an odd day. it's nbd

You should try punching somebody and seeing if they explode or not.

Haha! Kind of. My punches are awful, though. Even my fake punches in wrestling look sad. I would be an awful boxer, myself.

that's the one! I haven't seen it till now and I'm impressed that this movie was actually worse than the room. i also love the random environmental message shoehorned in by a hippie guy.

Ooh ooh ooh! Further to my rant about my telly dying, my sister today insisted I let her buy me a new swanky flatscreen, after much effort on my part to refuse (seriously), so now I'm picking out a new telly! Hey, I love my sis! Says it's only payback for how I look after her, but hell, I'm not looking for payback for that!

Still, I have to admit it's sweet!

I'M GOING FLATSCREEN AND HD! About ten years behind everyone else, but at least I'm getting there! :tramp:

And no, I didn't deliberately sabotage my old tv so that this would happen. I loved that old beast...!
