I read Gillard's "humble" speech of acceptance as a new PM, and well, it didn't come off the page as terribly humble to me... but then again nothing a pollie says sounds terribly humble to my ears...lol...

Honestly, I think she is trying to take things back into the middle more, as that's where the perceived votes are at... it seemed to me that Rudd may have been veering further to the left...

And I really detest it when politicians start saying they're going to start taking a harder line with border policy... smallmindedness tends to come hand in hand with this world view, and the whole border security issue is such a Howard era throwback...
Yeah, it's all just crazy. I don't know if you heard from over there but Rudd's popularity absolutely plummeted in recent weeks, mainly due to his policy regarding mining and mining tax - such a stupid thing to do when mining is such a huge industry here. So yeah, his popularity was completely smashed and the Labour party thought they had better get rid of him otherwise they won't win the next election. I'm not a fan of any politicians really, but I feel sorry for him that his own party just turned on him like that. If you get a chance to watch his farewell speech it is really sad - he actually cries. The fact that he blubbers shows that he obviously cares about Australia and about his job as PM. It was really sad to watch! That being said, Gillard was probably once of the most active deputies ever seen and I think it was just a matter of time before she took over.

I'm fascinated by the fact that we have our first female PM but at the same time I'm really apprehensive about what is going to happen and what Gillard is going to be like. As education minister she made a lot of decisions that I didn't agree with, being a student teacher in schools.

I just can't believe that our PM was overturned like that, when there wasn't even an election or anything!

Yeah, I feel very nervous about Gillard as PM... and about Labor's chances of re - election... I am hoping that the changes they've just made aren't too little too late and the backlash dies down... it was a foolish policy path for Rudd to take with the mining / natural resources tax discussion... it seems this really hurt him and overshadowed many of the great things he achieved in his term as PM...

But i really want to see Gillard succeed all that being said. I have been a labor voter in the past, and if I was in Australia still, I believe that's where my vote would go... despite all this, her set of core values definitely do correspond with mine best.

Australian politics is usually barely a blip on the radar over here, but i found out about the PM change on a US - based yahoo page. Kinda crazy!

I think they'll get re-elected under Gillard, I also think they have a better chance of winning if they have an election sooner rather than later. She'll cream Abbott, she has always held her own against him.

My parents are in the US right now... they are touring around a bit, then spending some time with me and the Mrs. in Milwaukee... I actually informed them of the leadership change via text message...lol!

Let's hope your nephew's lungs aren't very developed yet, or that you got him a new model designed to reduce the chance of vuvuzela-induced hearing loss!

Quote:
The vuvuzela has been the subject of controversy. Its high sound pressure levels at close range can lead to permanent hearing loss for unprotected ears after extensive exposure,[4] with a sound pressure of 120 dB(A) (the threshold of pain) at one meter from the bell.[2] In response to the controversy, a new model has a modified mouthpiece that reduces the volume by 20 dB.[5]

You actually managed to get one? They have been selling out all over the place. English football clubs have already began to ban them for the coming season.

Considering he doesn't have a clue what to do with it I don't think he's in danger of going deaf anytime soon.

Played some snooker, had a few beers in the sun, played some 5-a-side subbuteo with the bottle caps - a typically action-packed summer's day then.

I'm not thinking of HIM going deaf. I'm thinking of YOU.

One moment, the little tyke is fumbling with the horn, trying to figure out what to with it, and you're leaning over him thinking, "Aww! Isn't that cute?" The next moment, BLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAREEE! He figures it out, with the bell inches from your sensitive ears.

And there you go. Blammo. Deaf. No more music appreciation for you!!

You gotta watch those vuvuzelas.
