ignorant stuff average people say
JWB here reporting live from the bible belt, bringing you breaking news that in fact every stereotype you've ever heard about southern people is in fact true
so... this is basically a a thread to quote irl people that you interact with in one way or another dropping some jewels of non-wisdom... since i'm currently living in the south, i bring you a harvest of home grown southern ignorance.. but anyone living anywhere and interacting irl day to day with people who say dense ****, feel free to post them here for our amusement i heard these today: "i'm pretty sure that obama is actually osama bin laden" and yes he was serious, i inquired further and he said with a dead serious face that it would be the perfect way to take america down if you got a terrorist as president, and he even was talking about how if you take a picture of obama and a picture of osama the features match up perfectly, he said all this to a table full of seemingly sane adults, and nobody seemed to take issue or disagree with this idea, except one guy who noted the obvious height difference and the fact that "all middle easterners look the same" "people say he's the first black president but he aint got a drop of black in him, he's middle eastern" my coworker assures me i said his dad is from kenya, africa. and he was like it don't matter if it's in africa, he's still middle eastern. once again the table full of sane adults all seemed inclined to agree that obama is in fact middle eastern. "very little of the civil war was about slavery" that's another one. they don't like people taking down that rebel flag. they think the whole incident was a govt set up specifically to dismantle their southern heritage. and take their guns, of course. "i wouldn't be surprised if that boy (the SC shooter) is laid back at some island somewhere, a paid govt agent" |

Yeah, I hate this one. It gets complicated just because it's actually true that it wasn't entirely about slavery from the Northern perspective - many Northerners were super racist and actually were fighting against secession - but yeah, for the South it was absolutely all about slavery. The whole "Oh they just seceded for states' rights" thing doesn't hold water at all, because if they were actually in favor of states' rights, Southern states and politicians would have objected to the Dred Scott decision, which of course they did not.
