^ That toilet roll looks ok to me the way it is. It's practical and easy to use; if the toilet roll was flipped so the trailing end hung near the wall it would look tidier, but would be slightly less accessible. Because there has to be a word for everything, the toilet roll in the picture is overshot, while the alternative arrangement would be specified as undershot. Who is to say which way is correct? *successfully resists temptation to open a poll thread*

Been a while, MB.
Still alive, been a hell of a journey since my last post in June. Here's a very brief summary of where and how I've been:

Yep, dirt bike, on my birthday too back in July, which is actually pretty hilarious considering the last time I was in the hospital was on Christmas Day. Was riding a long and windy trail about 10 km out of cellular coverage, alone, took a corner around a large mud puddle, failed to notice a fist sized rock in the middle of the berm, kicked out of my front tire and laid the bike down right in the puddle. It wasn't a very hard fall but I landed directly on an older minor knee wound that had only recently finished healing, split it open much worse than it was before but didn't break anything. Got up, dusted myself off, looked down through the hole in my jeans and was pleasantly surprised to see a 1'' x 3'' wide opening in my knee, revealing what I thought was my knee cap (but later found out it was just my patellar tendon).
No pain whatsoever, with the boost of adrenaline and shock it felt like a minor bruise. Luckily I had my first aid kit with me so I was able to clean it up a bit and dress it well enough to stop the bleeding before it got to my head. Picked up my bike, hopped on, and rode it one legged back down the trail and into cellular coverage. Immediately called a friend and told him to meet me at my place (only ~15 minutes away) so that I could drop my bike off somewhere safe before being carted away to the emergency room (last time I was in ER my truck was stolen from the parking lot, but that's another story). 5 hours, 5 bottles of saline, 1 tetanus shot, a shot of antibiotics, and I was on my way. By 3 AM in the morning however, all of the anesthetic and adrenaline had drifted away, and I was in a whole new world of pain. Kept me off the bike for 2 weeks before I was able to bend my leg enough to ride without ripping out the stitches. But I'm back in the saddle now, it healed up really well and left a sick scar. Spoiler for Pics or it didn't happen. Gore warning:

Holy ****ing **** that picture is gross!!
You warned me, so that one's on me. But damn! That's going to haunt me for a while. Good thing that you didn't get any infections or more permanent damages. Last year, an uncle of mine crashed on a mountain bike while taking a jump on a forest trail. He broke his neck but survived and didn't even suffer anything too bad considering the situation. He has a stiff neck and a janky collarbone to show for it. |

About 2 weeks before my crash my father was trail riding dirt bikes with a retired friend of his from work, in his early 70s. His friend laid his bike down at low speed, got a minor scratch on his leg and insisted they keep on riding. Later that night around the campfire the swelling got so bad that he couldn't even pull his pant leg up to check on it, only then did he reveal to my father that he was on blood thinners. He left the next morning and a week later when my dad caught up with him he was completely bed ridden, his leg had gone septic from infection, and he was still refusing to see a doctor. Not long after his family finally convinced him and the doctors were just barely able to save his leg without amputation. I'd be lying if I said that wasn't the first thing that popped into my mind when I looked down and saw my knee. It's always a race to beat the infection, it's amazing how bad a small wound can get, let alone a gaping knee.
