The Famous & The Good
Who is the most Famous Music Artist/Band you have ever met?
I've met The Police. If you've met anyone you consider more famous than The Police then please post. Would you please also rate my encounter with The Police on a scale of 1-5. I have met some others but I am saving them in case I need to reveal them at a later date. |

As a live sound tech Iv'e worked with the following:
The wailers (not marley, but shared a Guinness w/ ashton Barrett) Doc Watson Bela Fleck and the Flecktones David Grisman Billy Joel Toots and the Maytals The Pietasters Richie Havens H20 Midtown 10,000 Maniacs Ani DeFranco (and others) I know personally: Rusted Root Gym Class Heroes The Sutras The Mighty Mighty Bosstones I would rate meeting The Police a 6 on a scale of 1 to 5. |

I met Rush when I was working as a dishwasher in the 76 Truck Stop in the early 80's. I was a junior in high school, and it was my after school job.
It was a Friday night, and the cook (I swear to God his name was Bubba), comes back and says "Them f@gs on your t-shirt is out there." So, I had on my AC/DC shirt, and I thought that's who he meant. I open the kitchen door just in time to see Geddy Lee walk by, back towards the rest room. I turn around and tell Bubba, "Man, that's Rush. not AC/DC. He just shrugs. He doesn't care. I do. Anyway, I ended up gettingtheir autographs on a menu, which I think my Mom still has in a box somewhere. The worst part is, Geddy asked me if I had tickets for the show in Philly. (They were coming from D.C., or Baltimore, I think), and like an idiot, I said yes. I did have seats, but if I'd have said no, I might have scored better seats, maybe even passes. Doh!!! Anyway, that's my brush with rock stardom. Geddy was short, Mr. Peart was quiet, but shook my hand. Alex Lifeson signed the menu, but didn't even look up.

I've been meaning to actually listen The Mighty Bosstones but haven't at this time. My time meeting famous people was during a three year span in the 80s as an autograph collector as a kid. Most were really friendly and forthcoming with souvineers and guest list tickets for gigs they were playing. Some were absolute tossers. Some were and still are very big names although musically not always my cup of tea. I wonder if anyone else on MB have ever collected autographs. Satchmo, do you reckon Autographs and bands would be an interesting thread? Thanks for the 6 out of 5 for my meeting with The Police. I would mark yours as, Wailers 5/5 , Toots 4/5, Richie Havens, 5/5. I must concede yours are better than my meetings as you were actually working with them on a creative level as opposed to me as a spotty 12-15 year old getting their signitures. |

The crazy thing is that I don't think Iv'e ever gotten an autograph from anyone. As far as working with artists go usually the bigger they are the less interaction I have with them. Most of the time I'm dealing with a tour manager or one of the bands personal sound techs. After the performance I will usually take the time to talk to the artist. Sometimes they're just as arrogant toward me as they would be anyone else. I left out a very important person from my list: Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon Who I had the extreme privelige of spending a couple hour with just hanging out and talking about random stuff after a show in buffalo about 12 years ago. Iv'e never met a more kind person. Richie Havens is also by far one of the nicest people Iv'e ever met I went to shake his hand after the show and he gave me the most enormous hug ever and thanked me very earnestly for my work. Ani DeFranco introduced herself by asking me if I wanted any of her aunt's zucchini bread and then talked my ear off incessantly for about 20 minutes (this was pre-soundcheck).
I love the Police and like Iv'e said before I'm holding my breath for a reunion that will never happen, but One can dream. |
