I'm not saying he's turning everything upside down, but on taking office he made a thing about the church not being so concerned about wealth and instead trying to follow the teachings of Jesus, help the poor etc. He apologised for the decades/centuries of child abuse practiced by the church, unlike other popes who virtually denied it or tried to hush it up. He dismissed cardinals and bishops who were proven to be abusers, again unlike his predecessors.

I can't believe I'm defending the pope, me of all people, but you're coming across as very narrow-minded and ignorant.

And yes, I'd like to slap every Pope and religious figurehead, and god fearing person for being naive or willfully ignorant.
so, it looks like you have a lot of slapping to do.
Personally, I'd slap the other three (well JP I died pretty quickly once in office so maybe not him) before Francis. He's the only pope in my lifetime I've actually had time for.

I just skimmed some stuff and made comments here and there. I don't think a majority of this thread is about religion. The parts I read were hardly even serious discussion.
It's a light hearted thread that I cast my dark evil spell on, as per.

Okay Soulflower.. Naive sure, but ignorant and narrow-minded? My comments were made based entirely on the other comments in the thread.

You brought up some good points in the last post, but if he said any of the things I quoted, than it is in the best interest of everyone to be reminded, although he is a step in the right direction, his views are still fucked.

The thing is, my checklist for liking a person isn't "oh, well, he's pretty bigoted, but he's not quite as bigoted as this other guy", pope or not. He's definitely better than the previous popes, but that's no great feat. I'd slap them too, but I'm specifically referring to Francis because he's actually current.

Pretty much all I wanted. I'm aware he's no saint: after all, he's part of a corrupt institution that's been keeping its people down with fear and prejudice for nearly a thousand years now. But he's only part of the problem, and is trying to change it. I think he deserves credit for that.

Oh, and, Soulflower? That hurts...

Totally agreed. He's done more in the last few years than all of his predecessors combined.

Trying not to laugh at this but it's too hard. No disrespect to that community but it is rather complicated with all the sexualities that get added to it in acronyms.

The thing is, as I said, I'm no fan of the pope nor the Church, and expected this guy to be another in a long line of apologists. But I've been unable to fault most of what he said on taking office, and while I haven't been following his twitter account or watching his webcam, everything I've heard about him up to now has been really positive. I didn't hear the remarks he supposedly made according to DWV, but if he did, I certainly don't agree with them but realise he's only repeating what a hundred of his predecessors have said all the way back into antiquity.

Also, he's not Irish but I know what you mean.

Also, how are you at the moment? Really missing you.
