I once heard him relate an epic story about how he took his boat out into the San Francisco Bay, and there was rough surf, and he almost capsized, but he managed to make it back okay. I don't remember there being any real context other than "I'm so awe inspiring even the ocean can't kill me!" The man is a mad genius.

Hmm, everything that I've heard from him regarding the LGBT community has been largely supportive.

That's the weird thing, he can't seem to make up his mind about this stuff. One minute, it's all "god loves everyone even the gays", and the next it's fire and brimstone.

In fairness, this has been the Catholic Church's stance for hundreds of years. You don't expect him to change that overnight? Also, everything I've heard him say up to now has impressed me, and I am not a believer but I feel he is the first decent pope in a very long time.
