I had mixed feelings as I was typing that and kinda regret posting it. I do feel like life would or at least could become boring without suffering but a lot of the suffering going on is pointles.

i think suffering is a bare necessity for life. i had someone check me on that once when i said if i was god i wouldn't have so much suffering. seriously try to think about even constructing a reality like that. how would life function etc.

I think it depends on what kind of suffering. It doesn't even have to be as extreme as suffering, just the struggle. I have never met anyone who's both interesting and had never struggled with anything in life or are ignorant of what it means to struggle. Of course that's just my experience, though.

If that picture doesn't make you cry you're not human.

That's not what I mean by struggle. That's outright suffering to pretty much the maximum degree and I'll have to retract my statement and say that there is indeed unnecessary suffering that the world would gain nothing from being without.
I've got a feeling this is another one of your self-deprecating jokes but on the off-chance it's not I'd have to disagree.

@ whateverdude
to me it's an all or nothing deal really. without pain there could be no suffering, but pain is a useful survival mechanism. with pain there is a seemingly infinite potential for suffering. you might try to solve problems of suffering by changing the environment and trying to making it less brutal (e.g. let's send food to that starving african kid and make the world a better place), but you can never destroy the potential for that kind of suffering to exist without removing the pain mechanism. imo anyway. then what am i? i mean it's sad but i didn't cry no. not like i don't feel bad for him... but i already seen a lot of ****ed up kids like that so i was already aware of that kind of ****. |

The potential for someone to suffer as much as the child in that picture does/did(?) can exist without anyone actually suffering that much though.

I know it's hard to understand, you being a hawk and all, but I don't like when vultures wait around for children to die.
