Say it loud, say it proud ... I'm a Nerd!
Who here will confess to being a Nerd? They used to get a really bad rap, but a programme I watched recently reminded me that without Nerds we would not have the massive advances we have today in the fields of computer technology, mobile phones and so much more. In a very real way, Nerds make the world go round.
So who will stand with me? I've been a Nerd forever: into comics, computers, sci-fi etc. I'm dorky (even though the inestimable Professor Frink postulates that Nerd stands for Not Even Remotely Dorky!) and while not exactly awkward with girls I'm not quite fighting them off with a stick either! I'm the one my neighbours call when their computers, TVs or whatever aren't working (the poor fools!) :D and I spend way more time on my computer than I do in the fresh air. I attach a lot more significance to TV programmes than I probably should, and I play no sports and have the kind of body a stick insect would be envious of. And I love being a Nerd! So who else will testify? It's not like the old days: the stock image of the geeky teenage boy covered in acne with his home science kit or homebuilt computer has been long erased from Mankind's consciousness --- sort of --- ladies can now be Nerds too, so don't be shy girls! One of us, one of us, one of us... ;) |
Played D&D well into my 20's (still would if someone irl around here did too).
Had a Commodore 64. Have been programming since the 80's. Grew up on DOS. Knows VB, .NET, Lisp, and a bit of C++. Have a small comic book collection. Favorite author is Heinlein. Build my own stereo's. Build my own PC's. Had every gaming console since the debut of Pong. IT/CAD Manager. (defun C:NerdStat (yes no) (if (= yes Nerd) (self wedgie) (setq Nerd no) ) ) My God... I never actually thought about it. I. Am. A. Nerd. But, I can still rock: |
Can't I just be a guy that likes nerdy things?
|
^You mean a, NERD!

Nerds are people too.

I think when people here nerd they think Urkel type personalties. I like nerdy/geeky things but I definitely do not fit the cliche. I never really enjoyed going to Friday Night Magic because I didn't like the other people there.
My nerdiness does not extend beyond gaming: Board Games/TCGs/MMORPGs. |
Two sets, each with three books, and I read all but two of them. The Fall of Reach, Ghosts of Onyx, and maybe First Strike are three of the most entertaining books I've ever read.

Who is he? I have no idea. Yesterday I spent the better part of an hour programming a calender on my computer with my fall TV schedule. I will now be alerted an hour and then ten minutes before any show I want to watch. In my defense, I could have been watching a show for months, but when the day comes I still end up saying, "What's on TV tonight?" Still, non-nerds don't do that. |
