I really don't see the point in making all of these birthday threads. I know it's nice and everything, but you can get the same effect by just pm'ing the person. The only way these thread's would be interesting would be if either there was a giant birthday thread were you celebrate people's birthdays, or if someone has a crazy birthday story like getting really drunk and doing something stupid.

that could be true but i would find it strange to pm someone i barely know, cuz i don't really know all that many people. it could be nice to generalise it so everyone could wish eveyone a happy birthday without it being weird, or maybe i'm the only one that thinks that!

Wouldn't you feel more special and recognized if someone made a thread for your birthday and have a bunch of people say happy birthday, rather than just get a PM from one?
