I think that's a poetic thing. I'm not sure what the actual rule is, but I've always referred to the sun as neuter. Hobbits, on the other hand, refer to the sun as female. But that's another story...

I've always thought of them in reverse, with the moon feminine. Probably because the moon is closer to what I like in a girl.
