Default I'm trying to stop drinking beer.

And start drinking Scotch. Single malt.

Recommend me something good but reasonably affordable. So far I've tried Glenfiddich 12 and I dig it. Maybe a little too light for me, but not by a lot. Before the alcohipsters jump in and start ragging on Glenfiddich, please know that I haven't developed a palate yet and I have my "Real Scotch V card" still.

I have my eye on mostly Lowland/Highland stuff. Trying not to go full on Isley right now.

Any thoughts on Auchentoshan Three Wood? How would that compare to Glenfiddich 12?

I think single malt is highly overrated. I really care more about how long the scotch has been aged then whether or not it's been blended. My go to is Johnny Walker Black, but I do dig some Macallan 30 once in a while.

I'm not opposed to blended at all!

I haven't tried Black yet, but I was planning on it because it seems to be a household name anyway. Any other rec's for blended? I do intend to also get some very high dollar stuff in both the single malt and blended vein either way, but I kinda wanna work my way there.

I went pick up some JWB today because, as much as I've heard about it, I've never tried it. (I was never much more than a beer person... until now)

WOW. I like this WAY more than Glenfiddich. It has a really nice smoky wood flavor. With 2 ice cubes, it still tastes great and balances out the harsher alcohol kick. I think I have a new favorite. And it's cheaper than the single malts.

How does the Macallan 30 compare to JWB?

That is the precise instruction I give to the bartender whenever I order it.

To be honest, It's been so long since I've had Macallan's that I wouldn't really be able to tell you anything other than it's delicious.

However I have a boxed bottle of JWB sitting on my end table. It makes for a great headphone stand.

Holy hell man, that would be a temporary stand at best in my pad. I can't keep alcohol. I tend to drink all of it.

Edit:

I see tubes! What is that?

It's a Schiit Lyr hybrid headphone amplifier (tube preamp stage/solid state power stage). The tubes are 1960 Amperex Bugle Boy 6DJ8s (Holland Heerlen factory). It's a pretty dreamy set up. The headphone stand has been upgraded, as the JWB is no longer.

Good choice. I'm more of a bourbon and rye guy but I also hope to become a connoisseur of scotch one day. I don't know much about it yet but I recently tried The Dalmore 12 and loved it at least as much as anything else I've tried.

Enticing label design too:
