Who knows you´re here?

The lounge is a place for some pretty idle questions, and this one is hardly profound, but I was wondering how open or closeted you are about using MB.

The only person IRL who knows that I´m a member of MB is my son, who is sworn to secrecy. Recently I considered inviting a RL friend to join us here, but I decided against it in the end.

How about you guys? Do you kept your MB alter-ego under wraps, or have you gone public and admitted to the world that you post in a music forum ?
Also, if you want to get philosophical, What does your decision say about you ? How does it affect the way you post?

djchameleon 02-02-2014 05:37 PM

I have invited people I know but they aren't big into forums. So they either lurk as a guest or create an account and never post.

Frownland 02-02-2014 05:42 PM

All of my friends know I post here.
But I don't have any friends.

Lisnaholic 02-02-2014 05:51 PM

^ If you resemble your avatar in any way, that´s not altogether surprising, Frownland!

And did you tell them that you were djchameleon ? - though I suppose they could work it out soon enough from the Member Picture thread...

Yep of course. I told them my user name. I am not ashamed of anything that I have posted here.

Mondo Bungle 02-02-2014 06:00 PM

I wouldn't want to expose my friends to the site.

bob. 02-02-2014 06:03 PM

i think that pretty much everybody i know in the real world knows i post on here....i've brought up discussions from this site several times to friends and family....i think i've only invited one person that i can think of....and he basically told me that you were all a bunch of music nerds like myself and he would feel inadequate here :)

Burning Down 02-02-2014 06:05 PM

My boyfriend does and he joined: Music Banter - View Profile: zombie kid

But I don't think anyone else does. I don't really care, anyways.

Lisnaholic 02-02-2014 06:21 PM

Had no idea that zombie kid was your boyfriend, BD. Now I have to check him out - see if he´s good enough for you

Good for you, dj ! For me, it makes me uneasy to think that someone I know can look over my shoulder at what I´m posting. By keeping things seperate, here on MB I can present myself as an accomplished musician, a womanizer and a friend to the famous - in fact, that reminds me of the time I was singing a duet with Beyonce...

I think you will find that he is a decent guy! :)

Trollheart 02-02-2014 07:26 PM

Can someone please explain to me what this "real world" is that everyone seems to be talking about? I hope you're not all suggesting that there's a world outside of here.... I don't think my barely adequate psychic defences could take that!

Janszoon 02-02-2014 08:58 PM

My wife, my brother and a friend who I invited but who's never posted all know about this place but that's it.

RoxyRollah 02-02-2014 09:17 PM

Google they know Im here...hell they know you're here too...

I don't think it's too idle a question. I was thinking about doing a topic about whether or not members discuss MB irl the other day.

The way some people behave on here I could never invite anyone irl to this site. So MB has become one of those things that can't share with other people irl. I usually talk about it abstractly irl something like 'I belong to this music site... they said [whatever] about that band.' I sometimes invite people in plug.dj to check out MusicBanter. I know it's not for everyone but there is also a probability they might like it. I actually have one "referral."

Membership runs from a few days to a few years. I don't know what kind of person hold out long than a few weeks or months. But I often wonder why some people stay and others go. I remember a couple members telling me they either thinking about or were going to quite MB. Sometimes they gave reasons. Even though I didn't know Stephen that well, but I felt bad for him when he made his last post explaining why he's leaving. I would hate to think if I invited someone here irl to join MB and he or she had a horrifying experience it would be in some way my fault. So no I don't talk about MB too much or encourage any one irl to join.

Isbjørn 02-02-2014 11:39 PM

I've invited four people. Two of them got banned, and the other two couldn't be arsed to post.

Was one them The___M?

Sequoioideae 02-03-2014 12:00 AM

No one knows I post here, and no one knows I have friends on here in the real world.

Taxman 02-03-2014 01:23 AM

The whole point is that here I'm able to talk as an anonymous, nobody knows me really and I really know now one. So I would not want anybody to know about my writings on that forum.

Looks like a lot of people share your attitude, Neapolitan, and are uneasy about inviting RL friends into this den of vipers:-

^ Luckily, I don´t think many people have a horrifying experience here; if we have any really aggressive posters they usually move on or get banned eventually. In Stephen´s case, I think it was just a gradual disappointment about members´ lack of interest in music. Post about your latest musical enthusiasm and you may be ignored completely; post about how big your dick is and the thread will run forever.

^ That´s an important first step, zombie kid. Congratulations. I´m going to take you up on your invitation and visit your User Profile right after submitting this post, so you´d better make sure it´s all cleaned up and tidy!!

YorkeDaddy 02-03-2014 06:26 AM

My girlfriend knows I'm here and I let her read my journal posts and whatnot before I post them.

My bandmate made an account but only has like 10 posts. I've mentioned this forum to a couple other people but didn't make an effort to get them to join or anything. That's about it!

It is not that big of a deal if someone ends up having a horrible experience. Sansa ran off one of my female friends that I got to join by being bitchy to her in shoutbox but it isn't the end of the world because my friend doesn't take the internet seriously.

If your friends are sensitive don't bring them to an internet forum.

^ Well, that´s a good sign of a solid relationship, YorkeDaddy. So no flirting or Valentines posts for you!

^ Yes, kind of surprising to me, but MB just doesn´t appeal to many musicians and enthusiasts.

^ Is that so? I know for a fact that another good member left because of her presence as well.

Scarlett O'Hara 02-03-2014 09:28 AM

My mom knows that I post here and we discuss people on here who are trolling. My friends know I'm on MB and know I'm a mod. My bestie joined years ago, but forums are really her cup of tea. I met a real member years ago who I still text to this day. I definitely keep the posts, drama and my contributions private.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-03-2014 09:34 AM

I got my mother to join in the hope of showing her how to use a laptop but 2 years on she still has no idea how to even turn the thing on, which is just as well because everybody thought it was me trolling anyway.
