I've told friends about posting here but they don't know what goes on at a forum, so it doesn't mean much. Just that I'm a music whore.

I say the same thing. It's funny, I say oh I'm a moderator on a music forum and people just go "oh yip" and that's it. It's not a common thing that people post on forums. None of my friends post on them, they don't understand what is the enjoyment of it. Facebook however, everyone is on. I find it utterly boring.

I've told my mom that I have internet friends and she says "cool". It's taken her a long time to accept that it's normal to be friends with people online that you've never met.

I don't really promote any forum or ask anybody to join, but I didn't make it a secret that I enjoy having conversations about games and music on the internet.
So technically, my family knows about it and some classmates - that's it.

I assume my parents know I am on several forums as they are bookmarked on their browsers but I don't discuss my forum usage aside from on other forums I go on.

Though talking to Americans on Facebook would probably lead to some of my real life friends to have a guess that I met them online.

Interesting that so many people have experienced the same reaction -disinterest, lack of understanding or even mild suspicion.

The first time I met someone who used a forum was in the early days of the internet and I still remember the baffled questions that I put to him in quick succession: "You write to someone? In Norway? About vampires?" Seemed the most bizarre thing in the world, but MB has now changed that puzzled attitude: I now get more pleasure posting in MB than I do emailing my real-life friends.
