I think Urban getting his Mom on here shows what a healthy relationship they have. Not a dam thing wrong with that.

I tell people about this place, and even suggested one of my very knowledgeable friends join up, but he doesn't really understand the concept. My GF gets confused as to which forum I'm talking about when I tell her some of the funny/interesting things that go on here, since I'm a member of quite a few forums. I've even directed some people to this place from other forums at times, especially around the time Trollheart gave my album that incredible review, and as long as I keep things on a civil level, there is no shame.

James 02-03-2014 05:14 PM

I always just say I post on a 'music website' and don't get specific cause I joined here when I was 13 and probably have some really tragic posts. It'll be worse than my facebook.

When I actually become good friends with someone I just mention them as my 'pen-pal' even though it's a white lie. I used to call UnchainedBallad my 'Portuguese pen-pal' to all my friends and it sounded a lot cooler.

having a pen pal is a cool thing?

Sounds pretty dorky to me.

butthead aka 216 02-03-2014 05:30 PM

i had a pen pal in middle school. dude got hit by a car and had a brain injury. was kinda slow after that but did become a hardcore christian for some reason. i have him on facebook and hes married

i usually dont name the message board itself but a couple ppl do know i post online a lot at various places. i was in plug the other nite at my buddies place with the computer hooked up to his flat screen, he thought plug was cool. i was tryin to play him deviouz's remixes and could only find them on my plug playlist

How about you guys? Do you kept your MB alter-ego under wraps, or have you gone public and admitted to the world that you post in a music forum ?
Also, if you want to get philosophical, What does your decision say about you ? How does it affect the way you post?

I've brought people in before, but you need to be a ****ing moron to stick around here and post.

And what is going on with your god damn apostrophe in the title of this thread?

Thanks for those kind words, they really gave my self-esteem a boost. I went from feeling like a a ****ing worthless moron to just a plan and ordinary ****ing moron. I'm so much happier now. :)

Sequoioideae 02-04-2014 01:30 AM

I'm really surprised at how many people have told at least one person outside the internet about this place. Maybe I'm just really secretive, and I like my privacy.

I remember as a kid I heard people talk about pen-pals. I thought it be cool to write to someone in another country and talk about music. I never did go about getting a pen-pal.

I think belonging MB is a lot like the whole correspondence concept of a pen-pal. Except for the fact you can not return to sender the post by people you don't care to read. You can put them on the ignore list, but those posts still linger there for the rest of the forum to see.

^ Yes, I like MB because it is a literary way of communicating. There is the challenge of expressing your ideas, and the reward of receiving some recognition from friends and peers. Of course not everybody sees it as a literary exercise; I´m going to choose an example from Batlord, one because it´s on this page and two because I´m confident he´ll understand that I´m joking, not criticising. Anyway, here´s an example of non-literary posting:-

^ Thinking about it, this is actually a pretty succinct way to convey your opinion. Perhaps I should be studying Batlord´s style more carefully.

^ Those are very good questions, KF.

The reason I don´t tell anyone that I post here is because once it´s out there in the real world, I have no control over who knows. One friend tells another friend and before I know it my boss is reading my posts and my Auntie Matilda is saying, "If he can spare time for his MB friends, why can´t he write a letter to me?"

Sequoioideae 02-05-2014 07:50 PM

My reasons for keeping people out of my internet life is because I say a lot of things on here I would not normally say out in the real world. I wear a mask out in the real world, and take it off when I'm posting here. I've gone without the mask in real life and put it on when I post here a bit more lately though. The gist of it is I have secrets I'm not comfortable sharing, both online and off, so I tend to separate both things on the internet, and things in reality.

None of my homies know I'm here. If they do find out, then I am no longer the homie. :)

misspoptart 02-20-2014 07:21 AM

I don't think anyone IRL knows I'm here. If I disappear one day without a word, expect the worst, and never find out the truth!

I'm open about the fact that I post here, though none of my friends or family members are particularly interested. I'm also involved in a philosophy community on youtube, so I play the role of the friend who spends too much time on the internet. People get noticeably uncomfortable when I say things like "I was talking to my internet friend about X..." etc. Whatever. Can't be bothered.

I've told friends about posting here but they don't know what goes on at a forum, so it doesn't mean much. Just that I'm a music whore.

I say the same thing. It's funny, I say oh I'm a moderator on a music forum and people just go "oh yip" and that's it. It's not a common thing that people post on forums. None of my friends post on them, they don't understand what is the enjoyment of it. Facebook however, everyone is on. I find it utterly boring.

I've told my mom that I have internet friends and she says "cool". It's taken her a long time to accept that it's normal to be friends with people online that you've never met.

Silenzio 03-02-2014 05:38 AM

I don't really promote any forum or ask anybody to join, but I didn't make it a secret that I enjoy having conversations about games and music on the internet.
So technically, my family knows about it and some classmates - that's it.

Goofle 03-02-2014 05:43 AM

I assume my parents know I am on several forums as they are bookmarked on their browsers but I don't discuss my forum usage aside from on other forums I go on.

Though talking to Americans on Facebook would probably lead to some of my real life friends to have a guess that I met them online.

Interesting that so many people have experienced the same reaction -disinterest, lack of understanding or even mild suspicion.

The first time I met someone who used a forum was in the early days of the internet and I still remember the baffled questions that I put to him in quick succession: "You write to someone? In Norway? About vampires?" Seemed the most bizarre thing in the world, but MB has now changed that puzzled attitude: I now get more pleasure posting in MB than I do emailing my real-life friends.
