Landmarks....
So I looked, and I see nothing on this...
As I was driving to the bank this morning, I was struck by the sight of a new church on a main road that appeared over night... And then I started thinking, well hell there are tons of bizarre landmarks all over the place... (Not that the church was strange... But my train of thought was...) Got an interesting one in your town, country, or on your planet? If so what is it? Why is it there? And should it stay... For example, in Worcester Mass there is one a statue of a man holding a turtle in a precarious position and the turtle is expelling water from his mouth like he is enjoying it... WTF? |
There was one in the central valley by my grandmother's house that was this big ugly cement spike protruding from the earth. There was this rich man who hated his wife and adult kids with a passion, so he gave them theirs from the grave by making the design of the structure and stating that they had to use the entire family fortune on building that edifice in his will. And they did. And now it's a landmark.

And Paul I miss both of those landmarks soo much... |
Smallest working church in Europe possibly the world, made by a monk between 1914 & 1939. He never saw it finished. Decorated entirely of broken crockery. Can hold about 8 people.

**** ME! that is stunning.... is that marble or stones?

The predominant landmark during the first 40 years of my life
http://www.vagabondsummer.com/wp-con...02/images2.jpg When this statue was unveiled in 1985 some had hoped that it would become an icon for the city, but it was just over 25 years later when a quirky sketch comedy cable show would take it's name and finally achieve some level of recognition outside the city http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._sculpture.jpg |

well I think our most interesting one is this, just opened in September I think it was, a new library, by day:
http://www.libraryofbirmingham.com/s...&ssbinary=true By night (they turned it claret & blue until some time in January): http://www.avfc.co.uk/javaImages/7b/...2466811,00.png Won building of the year worldwide, will become another iconic Midlands landmark like the Selfridges store: http://www.cd-traveller.com/wp-conte...Birmingham.jpg I like that they stick in your memory & are different, should definitely stay. Aston Hall - http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JSKymHAQ-W...d-1024x768.jpg Soho House where the Lunar Society met: http://www.gardenvisit.com/blog/wp-c...51034b_o_d.jpg There are loads tbh. |

I made a landmark too, and while it's hardly world famous it is registered with the Smithsonian as an original work of art. It's found on the Burke-Gilman trail in Lake Forest Park, WA, I had nothing to do with the art but much to do with the labor, I mixed all the concrete and worked it into the mold of this local landmark http://www.musicbanter.com/members/p...me-my-fish.jpg Me in front of a landmark in the national park in my home state, my current avatar is found in this almost perfectly clean clear water http://www.musicbanter.com/members/p...7-img-0247.jpg *edited to add: you'll have to take my word for it, I do own other shirts. It just seems that every time I get my picture snapped I'm wearing that one... |

There are some interesting landmarks in Toronto and the surrounding area. Of course the CN Tower and beside it, the Skydome (well Rogers Centre now but everyone still calls it Skydome). My own photo:
http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/a...0725001341.jpg Old City Hall. It's now a provincial courthouse: http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/a..._1723968_o.jpg City Hall, right next door: http://www.toronto4stay.com/dtjpg/cityhall1.jpg First Canadian Place (white building, my own photo from the CN Tower). Tallest skyscraper in Canada, at 90 floors (I think). http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps833ee083.jpg Queen's Park, Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Right in the middle of the University of Toronto campus, and so this landmark is consistently flanked by student protesters, as you can see. http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps5701ffa2.jpg One of my favourite landmarks is the Flatiron Building, actually called the Gooderham Building. http://www.torontoisawesome.com/wp-c...9/IMG_5353.jpg |

Penshaw Monument brings with it a great sense of familiarity and safety for me. I think that has a lot to do with the ability to see it from a great distance, so if I travel I always know I'm nearly home when I see this on the skyline. http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/image...92131_sage.jpg The Sage in Gateshead is a modern concert hall. They have two large halls, and a separate, smaller gig venue. Its really spacious inside too, so they have a bar, a cafe, and often various exhibitions in the interior and the foyer. They have also had some festivals and gigs outside, which is nice as it stands along the river Tyne which separates Gateshead from Newcastle. http://www.getintonewcastle.co.uk/wp...ge-680x265.jpg http://www.lightwave-print.co.uk/gal...ews/LW0009.jpg This is an eye-sore, but we're told it's "kind of a big deal". I think the Angel of the North is still the largest sculpture in England or something stupid. All I know is you can drive along the A1 towards or away from Newcastle and if you're with someone who isnt from the area and familiar with it, will undoubtedly ask what the **** it is. http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl...1/img/laun.jpg And this is, uh, a sculpture made out of shopping trolleys, next to The Telegraph pub in Newcastle. I dont think theres anything else to say about that. |
Cost millions of taxpayers' Euro, nobody likes it, represents nothing except the Irish Government giving its people the largest finger in the world!
http://www.e-architect.co.uk/images/...dublin_ir1.jpg But then we have decent ones of two of our favourite sons... http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m9...waao1_1280.jpg http://www.rorygallagher.com/images/IMG_0661.jpg |
YES! Big Phil outside of Bruxelles! I adored that pub. I dont know what its like now. Phil was vandalised not so long ago, wasnt he? Was he cut down or something?

Aren't you from Dublin? There must be loads of landmarks there. |
Lol, we have a few landmarks in Toronto which are absolute eyesores as well. Every city has got them.
|
Here in Philly, right on top of city hall, we have this 37 foot tall statue of state founder William Penn with his cock out, ready to piss on unsuspecting citizens. Actually, it's just his hand, but if you're approaching city hall from the biggest boulevard downtown, this is the view you get:
